Nigeria’s sole CAF inter-club representative, Rivers United, will be hoping to begin their CAF Champions League group-stage campaign on a positive note when they take on defending champions Pyramids FC at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo on Saturday.
This marks the first time a Nigerian club is featuring in the CAF Champions League group stage since Lobi Stars in the 2018/19 season. The Makurdi side finished third in their group behind Wydad AC and Mamelodi Sundowns with two wins, one draw, and three losses, while ASEC Mimosas ended bottom.

The Pride of Rivers will be aiming for a strong start against a Pyramids side currently struggling for form, having failed to win their last two games, losing 5-4 on penalties to Zamalek in the Egyptian Super Cup semifinal and falling 2-1 to Ceramica Cleopatra in the third-place match.
Rivers United, however, head into the clash with momentum. The Port Harcourt club is unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions, securing four wins and two draws, including recent back-to-back victories in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
Having reached the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2022/23 season, Rivers United will be looking to replicate, and perhaps surpass, that achievement on the continent’s biggest stage.
