Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman says his nomination for the 2024 Ballon d’Or is “just the start of hopefully something very special.”
The 27-year-old was named among the 30 nominees for the prestigious award, making headlines as the only African on the men’s shortlist.
“This year has been remarkable,” Lookman told BBC Sport Africa. “I’ve come on leaps and bounds, and it’s been a defining year in terms of progress and the steps taken.”
The Atalanta forward was also nominated for the African Player of the Year award alongside teammate William Troost-Ekong.
Lookman has had a fantastic 2024 football campaign, emerging Atalanta’s hero by scoring a hat-trick in their 3-0 Europa League final win over Bayer Leverkusen.
“That night was special,” he recalled. “The way we did it was incredible because Leverkusen were on fire that season. Those are the moments you wish and dream for.”
He was also one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast early this year, scoring three goals on the team’s run to the final where they lost to the host.
After joining Atalanta in August 2022, Lookman has thrived in the club’s attacking style of play under coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
“They allowed me to play my type of football,” he said. “The coach likes us to attack, to score goals, to create. I’ve been able to show my qualities.”
On competing in the Champions League, Lookman said, “It’s a different feel… a special feeling to it.
“It’s magical nights. It’s a huge honour and a blessing to play in that competition.”
Despite his success, Lookman remains focused on the future. “I’m anticipating the future because I’m looking forward to achieving great things,” he said. “I’m never really satisfied. That’s always my mindset – let’s go for more.”
