The transfer saga surrounding Ajax striker Chuba Akpom has taken yet another dramatic turn, with the player now favouring a move to Ipswich Town — even as Ajax lean towards a rival offer from Birmingham City, Bold Sports reports.

According to reports from Ben Jacobs and Anthony Joseph, Akpom has already passed a medical with Ipswich Town and is eager to join the Portman Road side. The Tractor Boys have tabled a season-long loan offer, with an obligation to buy for £7 million if they secure promotion to the Premier League.

However, Birmingham City have reignited the race by altering their approach. Initially in talks for a similar loan arrangement, the Blues have now gone in with a permanent offer of around £6 million — hoping the more straightforward deal will convince Ajax to sell.

Sources suggest Ajax prefer Birmingham’s proposal, which guarantees an immediate transfer fee rather than relying on promotion-based conditions. Talks between the Dutch giants and both clubs are ongoing, with Akpom’s preference weighing in favour of Ipswich, but Ajax’s financial interest potentially swinging the deal the other way.

This tug-of-war has added further intrigue to an already tense situation, with the two clubs set to face each other in their Championship opener on Friday night. Should the saga stretch beyond the next 48 hours, the striker could find himself watching from the stands as his potential new sides battle on the pitch.

Akpom, 29, spent the second half of last season on loan at Lille from Ajax, scoring three goals in 16 appearances. He joined Ajax in 2023 after a prolific spell at Middlesbrough and has attracted interest from several clubs this summer, including Olympiakos.

For now, the decision rests on a delicate balance—between the player’s wish, Ajax’s financial priorities, and both clubs’ ambitions. A resolution is expected soon, with both Championship clubs eager to secure the striker’s services before the season kicks off.
