Ademola Lookman etched his name into Nigerian football history after scoring for Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey Final against Real Sociedad. The match finished 2-2 after regulation time before Atletico suffered a 3-2 defeat on penalties at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville.‎‎

The forward has now delivered seven goals and four assists in 18 appearances since his switch from Atalanta. He also featured in Atletico’s most recent match and has become a consistent attacking option, contributing key moments in high-pressure fixtures.‎‎

Sociedad struck first through Ander Barrenetxea within the opening minute. Atletico needed a response, and Lookman stepped up. He cut inside and fired a precise left-footed shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner to restore parity.‎‎

Before the break, Sociedad regained control. Captain Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the penalty spot to give his side a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.‎‎

Atletico raised their intensity in the second half. Lookman remained involved and nearly scored again in the 60th minute after meeting a cross from Marcos Llorente, but his effort sailed over the bar.‎‎

He was later substituted as Atletico searched for another breakthrough. Their persistence paid off late on when Julian Alvarez found the net to make it 2-2 and send the final into extra time.‎‎Neither side could find a winner, leading to penalties, where Real Sociedad held their nerve to claim a 3-2 victory.‎‎

With his goal, Lookman becomes only the second Nigerian to score in a Copa del Rey final, joining Finidi George, who achieved the feat with Real Betis in 1997. The milestone underlines Lookman’s growing influence and highlights his contribution on one of Spain’s biggest domestic stages.‎‎
