AFCON 2023: Troost-Ekong, Aina, Lookman make Team of the Tournament

The Confederation of Africa Football Technical Study Group have listed Super Eagles trio, William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, and Ademola Lookman in the Best XI for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

The Technical Study Group who had been assigned to analyze the tournament and its trends released the list based on the performance of individual players and teams in the competition. 

Nigeria alongside hosts and winners Cote d’Ivoire have three players each on the list, South Africa and DR Congo both have two players apiece while Equatorial Guinea has one player.

South Africa’s Ronwen Williams who was adjudged the best goalkeeper in the competition and and golden glove winner is in goal ahead of Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali.

Player of the Tournament William Troost-Ekong leads the defense alongside DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba while Ola Aina mans the right-back position and Cote d’Ivoire’s Ghislan Konan plays in left-back.

Despite Super Eagles Frank Onyeka’s energetic display in midfield, he is missing on the list. The Study Group went for the trio of Teboho Mokoena (South Africa), Jean Michael Seri (Cote d’Ivoire), Franck Kessie.

The forwards include Yoane Wissa (DR Congo)Ademola Lookman (Nigeria), and Emilio Nsue (Equatorial Guinea) who finished as the competition’s top scorer with five goals. 

Cote d’Ivoire caretaker coach Emerse Fae is listed as the coach of the team.
