Acting Nigeria Football Federation General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme has praised the Flamingos after their impressive triumph at the WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, Bold Sports reports.
The Nigeria U17 women’s national team defeated Togo 4-0 in Sunday’s final. The victory completed a perfect tournament for Akeem Busari’s side, who won all five matches. They scored 17 goals and conceded only two.
Ikpeme praises Flamingos’ achievement
Ikpeme described the Flamingos’ performance as a source of pride for Nigeria. He also expressed confidence in the team ahead of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
“The Flamingos have done very well, made the nation proud and I have this faith in the players that they are not done yet. I have confidence in the team to go to Morocco and achieve great things at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup that is starting next month.

“It is no mean feat to win five matches out of five in a tournament. That is a distinction. The NFF is appreciative of the WAFU-B headquarters for organising the tournament as a premium preparatory event for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, and I believe the Flamingos have benefitted immensely ahead of the global competition,” Ikpeme said.
The Flamingos showed their strength throughout the competition. They opened their campaign with a 5-0 victory over Niger Republic.
Nigeria then defeated Ghana 4-2 before recording a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso. The team also overcame hosts Côte d’Ivoire 2-0 before their emphatic victory against Togo in the final.
Flamingos turn attention to World Cup
Captain Harmony Chidi scored twice from the penalty spot during the final. Oluebube Umejiaku and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi also found the net after the break.
The WAFU-B title now gives the Flamingos another boost before the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Nigeria will head into the global competition after a strong regional campaign. The Flamingos also carry the experience of their bronze-medal finish at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
The team will return to Nigeria on Tuesday as preparations continue for the World Cup.
