Team Nigeria continued their impressive run in weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as Folashade Rafiatu Lawal delivered a record-breaking performance to win gold in the women’s 58kg event on Monday.
The 29-year-old successfully defended the Commonwealth title she won in Birmingham in 2022, producing a dominant display that extended Nigeria’s medal haul to 10.
Lawal wasted no time stamping her authority in the event, setting three Commonwealth Games records in the snatch. Her final lift of 103kg gave her a commanding advantage over Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau, who managed 94kg.
The Nigerian maintained her dominance in the clean and jerk, lifting 126kg to set another Commonwealth Games record and seal victory with a record-breaking total of 229kg.

Folashade Lawal’s combined lift left her 14kg clear of Taschereau, who claimed the silver medal with 215kg, while India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam secured bronze after recording a total of 199kg.
Lawal’s victory increased Team Nigeria’s medal tally to six gold and four silver medals, with all 10 medals coming from weightlifting and para powerlifting.
The triumph marks another historic outing for Lawal, who reaffirmed her status as one of the Commonwealth’s finest weightlifters by successfully defending her title in record-breaking fashion.
