Nigeria’s Flying Eagles made a perfect start to their 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign with an emphatic 4-2 victory over arch-rivals Ghana at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Côte d’Ivoire on Monday.
Abdu Maikaba’s side produced an impressive attacking display, with Olayemi Ayinla, Lucky Oraro and Abdulmuiz Adeleke all finding the back of the net to hand Nigeria maximum points and top spot in Group B.
The Flying Eagles wasted little time asserting their dominance as Ayinla opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Oraro doubled Nigeria’s advantage on the half-hour mark before in-form forward Adeleke continued his fine goalscoring form by adding a third in the 40th minute.
Although Ghana responded with two goals, Adeleke completed his brace deep into stoppage time to restore Nigeria’s two-goal cushion and wrap up an impressive 4-2 victory.

The result gives the seven-time African champions an ideal start to the regional tournament and puts them in a strong position ahead of their remaining group fixtures.
Nigeria will return to the Charles Konan Banny Stadium on Wednesday, July 29, where they will face Togo in their second Group B match as they aim to maintain their winning momentum.
Despite the convincing victory over their fierce rivals, Maikaba insisted his team would not get carried away by the result, stressing that their focus has already shifted to the challenge ahead.
The Flying Eagles coach described Togo as another formidable opponent and emphasised that his side would approach every game with the same level of determination, discipline and respect as they continue their quest for the WAFU B U-20 title.
