Onome Didih delivered a commanding performance to win gold in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, taking Nigeria’s medal tally to nine.
Didih dominated the event from start to finish, finishing well ahead of India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav, who settled for silver with a total lift of 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed the bronze medal with 178kg.
The Nigerian produced a record-breaking display in the snatch, opening with a Commonwealth Games record lift of 85kg before matching the Commonwealth record with 90kg on her second attempt. She then surpassed that mark on her final attempt, lifting 93kg to establish a new Commonwealth record.
Didih continued her dominance in the clean and jerk, lifting 113kg to set another Commonwealth Games record and finish with a Games record total of 206kg, sealing an emphatic victory.

Didih’s triumph adds to Nigeria’s success in weightlifting after Edidiong Joseph Umoafia also broke the Commonwealth Games record to claim gold in the men’s 71kg event, while Ruth Nyong secured silver in the women’s 48kg competition.
Nigeria have now won five gold and four silver medals in Glasgow, underlining the team’s strong start across the weightlifting and para powerlifting events.
Meanwhile, on the athletics track, Commonwealth Games debutant Miracle Ezechukwu made an impressive start to her campaign by winning her women’s 100m heat in 11.32 seconds (-1.5).

Ezechukwu crossed the line ahead of Kishawna Niles, who finished second in 11.52s, and Deborah Acheampong, who placed third in 11.66s, to book her place in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Her qualification means Nigeria will have three representatives in the women’s 100m semifinals, with Ezechukwu joining Blessing Ogundiran and Rosemary Chukwuma, who both advanced automatically with byes.
