Ruth Asuquo Nyong delivered Team Nigeria’s first medal of the day on Sunday, claiming silver in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event to take the country’s total medal haul to seven at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Nigerian lifter produced a remarkable comeback to finish with a combined total of 168kg, ending behind India’s Mirabai Chanu, who claimed gold with a record-breaking performance, while Malaysia’s Irene Henry settled for bronze.
Nyong made an encouraging start in the snatch, successfully lifting 71kg on her opening attempt before registering a new personal best of 75kg on her second lift. The effort placed her third after the snatch phase behind Chanu, who set a new Commonwealth Games record with 85kg, and Henry, who managed 77kg.
The clean and jerk proved far more dramatic for the Nigerian. Nyong failed her opening two attempts at 93kg, leaving her medal hopes hanging in the balance. Under immense pressure, she successfully completed the lift on her final attempt, securing a total of 168kg and sealing the silver medal.

Chanu, meanwhile, underlined her dominance by setting another Commonwealth Games records on her way to gold with an overall total of 190kg.
Elsewhere, Khadijat Ajisola exited the women’s 54kg boxing competition following a narrow split-decision defeat to Wales’ Helen Jones. Ajisola lost 3-2 on points in a closely contested bout, with two of the five judges scoring the contest in the Nigerian’s favour.
Nigeria also endured another setback in the men’s 3×3 basketball tournament, falling 21-16 to Scotland. The defeat left the team with a 1-3 record after four matches, having recorded their only victory against Cape Verde in their opening fixture.
