Despite failing to gain promotion to the topflight, French Ligue 2 side Bordeaux is looking to block striker Josh Maja’s move to Glasgow Rangers by attempting to offer him a new improved contract to stay at the club for at least another season.
Maja had the opportunity to leave Bordeaux at the start of the 2022/23 season but opted to stay back, take a pay cut with the hopes of helping them return to the top flight after their relegation from Ligue 1 at the end of the 2021/22 season.
Despite finding the back of the net 16 times in 36 games for Les Girondins, the club finished third in the league thereby failing to return to the top flight a huge disappointment for both player and club.

Maja and the club have a gentleman’s agreement that will allow him to leave if they fail to gain promotion to Ligue 1, however, Bordeaux is hoping he will stay for another season as they try to attempt another promotion dogfight in Ligue 2.
According to a highly-respected French publication L’Equipe, Bordeaux is offering the Nigeria international a new deal “A one-year extension offer (plus an optional year) has been sent to him (Maja) in recent days, but the Girondins are aware that it will be very difficult to convince him to stay.

Rangers have not hidden their desire to tempt the former Sunderland and Fulham striker to Ibrox this season after failing in their attempt to land him last season.
Maja’s current deal with Bordeaux is set to expire on June 30 but despite his attachment to the club, there are indications that his game against Rodez on June 2, is the last for the club.
