Super Eagles midfielder Nathan Tella has signed a new long-term contract with Bayer Leverkusen, committing his future to the Bundesliga side until 2031.

The club confirmed the development on Tuesday, announcing that the Nigerian International will remain at the BayArena for an additional five years.

Tella, who has now spent three seasons in Germany, has made 95 appearances for Leverkusen, playing a key role in a historic period that saw the club win the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and Super Cup.

“Nathan Tella extends his contract with Bayer 04 until 2031! We’re so happy to continue this journey with you, Nathan!” the club revealed on their social media platforms.

Reacting to the extension, Tella expressed his excitement in an interview with the club’s media, Werkself TV: “Obviously I’m really happy. It shows that the club have had a lot of trust in me, especially in a difficult season for me personally, with my injuries. But the fact that the club have offered me a new deal, I feel at home and comfortable, it’s a no-brainer for me to sign it.”

Reflecting on his journey at the club, the midfielder said: “It means a lot, coming here, my first ambition was to be part of a competitive team. This club has helped me achieve dreams I didn’t even think I would have.”

Tella also spoke about his achievements with the team: “I’ve been able to play in the Champions League, gone to an European final, won the Bundesliga undefeated, it’s great. To have a club, which is such a family club, and to be part of it for a long time is an amazing feeling.”

On his best moment as a Leverkusen player, Tella said: “My first year when we went undefeated. Having the chance to come here off the back of playing in England and winning the league undefeated is an amazing feeling for me. Thankfully we were able to share it with the fans and hopefully we can have more moments to celebrate.”

The 26-year-old recently endured a challenging spell on the sidelines, missing two months due to injury before making his return against Bayern Munich earlier this month. He, however, expressed confidence in his fitness and readiness to contribute moving forward.

“I feel good, we’ve got a great set of staff here who have helped me rehab well and get back fit. I want to help the team push, we know the goals we want to achieve, and there’s no reason why we can’t achieve them together. I wanna be a part of that and I’m happy to be a part of that.”
