…Amas Obasogie apologizes for poor outings, promises to be better

Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars have cleared Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie of any wrongdoing and reinstated him into the team with immediate effect after conducting a preliminary investigation into suspicions of match-fixing, Bold Sports reports.

The club had on February 27 suspended Obasogie for three months pending the outcome of an internal investigation following a series of errors that led to goals conceded by the former Bendel Insurance goalkeeper.

However, just a week later, the club has reversed the suspension after its initial findings exonerated the Nigeria international. The investigation concluded that the mistakes were technical errors during matches and not intentional actions linked to match manipulation.

In a statement released on Saturday and signed by Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Cassano, the club explained that the concerns arose after repeated mistakes in recent games.

“Singida Black Stars Club would like to inform the public that there was concern among the management, fans, and stakeholders following repeated mistakes in some recent games, including against Flambeau du Centre (CAF Confederation Cup), Pamba Jiji and Namungo FC (NBC Premier League),” the statement read.

“Due to this situation, the Club Management, through the Disciplinary Committee, initiated a preliminary investigation into the suspicious reports regarding our player Amas Obasogie.

“After the initial investigation, the player’s defense, and a clear statement from the Club’s General Manager, it has been determined that there is no evidence of match-fixing or deliberate misconduct. The incidents that raised concerns have been identified as technical errors within the game.”

Following his suspension, Obasogie publicly denied any involvement in match-fixing and stated that he would fully cooperate with the club’s investigation to clear his name.

The club also confirmed that the goalkeeper has apologized for the mistakes and pledged to improve his performances moving forward.

“Amas Obasogie has apologized for the circumstances that gave rise to these interpretations and has promised to work on the shortcomings that emerged to improve his level and restore the trust of fans and stakeholders,” the statement added.

“In light of this, the Club has decided to reverse the previous decision to suspend the player for three months, and the player has been allowed to continue his duties with the team.”

The decision comes as a major relief for Obasogie, who had strongly maintained his innocence after the allegations were initially made.
