…Onyedika missed the return leg in Spain
Two members of the Super Eagles squad have seen their European ambitions cut short after their respective clubs were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League knockout play-offs.
Raphael Onyedika’s Club Brugge were unable to progress beyond the tie despite a competitive first-leg display. After a 3-3 draw at home against Atletico Madrid, the Belgian side travelled for the return leg needing a strong performance but suffered a 4-1 defeat, resulting in a 7-4 aggregate loss seeing the Spanish giants advance to the next stage.
Although Onyedika missed the decisive fixture due to suspension, he had played an influential role in the opening leg and was among Brugge’s dependable performers during their European run.

Meanwhile, Bruno Onyemaechi’s Olympiacos also bowed out of the competition. The Greek outfit went into the second leg trailing 2-0 on aggregate and required a comeback performance to stay alive. However, they were held to a goalless draw away from home, confirming their elimination with a 2-0 aggregate defeat.
Onyemaechi featured as Olympiacos attempted to break down their opponents but were unable to overturn the deficit from the first meeting. The result brought their Champions League campaign to an end at the play-off stage.

For both Nigerian internationals, the focus now shifts back to domestic football and the upcoming international window with the Super Eagles. While their European journey this season has concluded, their performances remain significant for Nigeria as preparations continue for future continental and global assignments.
