Nigerian forward Philip Otele made an immediate impact on his Bundesliga debut, providing an assist as Hamburger secured a crucial 2-0 win over Heidenheim in their league clash on Saturday, Bold Sports reports.

Otele, who signed for Hamburger on loan from Swiss champions Basel during the January transfer window, made the starting lineup and wasted no time in showing his quality, contributing immensely as Merlin Polzin’s side claimed their first win of the year.

After a cagey first 45 minutes where both sides struggled to create big opportunities, Otele proved to be the difference, assisting Ransford Königsdörffer who scored his second league goal of the season to give the visitors the lead on the brink of half-time.

Otele was withdrawn from the game in the 68th minute, and after defending their lead for most of the second half, Hamburger extended their advantage in the 78th minute as Fabio Vieira’s pass was tapped into the net by Rayan Philippe, wrapping up the win.

The victory took Hamburger up to 11th on the table with 22 points, three points clear of the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Heidenheim remain bottom of the Bundesliga with 13 points in 21 games as their hopes of remaining in the top flight continues to fade.

Otele will hope to impress once again when Hamburger host Union Berlin in their next Bundesliga clash on Saturday, February 14 while Heidenheim will be desperate for victory when they meet Augsburg a day after.
