Ikorodu City’s new head coach, Ali Kandil, says his team is “ready and excited” as they prepare to kick off their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2025-26 campaign against Kwara United at the Kwara Sports Complex on Sunday.
Kandil steps into a big role after replacing Nurudeen Aweroro, who left Ikorodu City to become the new head coach of Shooting Stars. Aweroro took charge of the Oga Boys after matchday five last season and inspired the team to a historic fourth-place finish.
Having served as part of Aweroro’s backroom staff, Kandil is no stranger to the team and says preparations have gone smoothly ahead of the clash with the President Cup champions.
“We’ve had preseason to prepare, preparations have been good, the boys have put in a lot of good work and I think everyone is ready and excited for the season,” Kandil told the club’s media.

The tactician expressed optimism about the challenges ahead, highlighting his belief in the team’s growth and potential: “It’s an exciting challenge to be honest. I see it as an opportunity to build towards the success and the development of the team,” he said.
Kandil also praised the club’s recruitment, revealing that new signings have quickly adapted to the squad’s playing style.
“The new players have integrated well enough. Of course, everyone would like to start the season with a win. The games are tough and tricky, but if we stick to our game plan, show enough character, discipline, and composure on the ball, then I’m positive of a result.”
Ikorodu City will be aiming to build on last season’s impressive run, but a stern test awaits against Kwara United, who enter the match brimming with confidence after lifting the President Cup.
