Newly appointed SS Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri has hinted that Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru could play a key role for the club under his leadership, provided he improves certain aspects of his game.

Dele-Bashiru’s future at the club had been uncertain ahead of the new season due to limited game time, having made just 20 league appearances last term, starting 12 matches and coming off the bench eight times.

Despite the limited minutes, the 24-year-old still managed to score five goals and provide three assists in 29 appearances across all competitions for I Biancocelesti.

Sarri, however, has expressed optimism about Dele-Bashiru’s potential.

“Dele is a very strong guy who, if he manages to learn a few moves, can give us a big hand,” the former Chelsea and Napoli coach said during his first interview following his unveiling.

He also singled out Dele-Bashiru and new signing Nuno Tavares as two players with exciting prospects.

“Tavares and Dele-Bashiru are two books waiting to be written. Nuno is better tactically than I thought, his past at Benfica must have left him with something important.”

Dele-Bashiru initially joined Lazio on loan from Turkish Super Lig side Hatayspor at the start of the 2023/24 season. His move was later made permanent after a series of impressive performances, particularly in the UEFA Europa League, where he scored twice and registered two assists in eight appearances.
