The Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall at Teslim Balogun Stadium has come alive with pulsating energy as the 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships continue to serve up thrilling action and rising stars in Lagos.
After a day of fiery rallies and national pride, Nigeria’s men’s team cemented their dominance in Group 1, cruising into the semifinals with commanding wins over Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. The trio of Matthew Kuti, Taiwo Mati, and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai showcased poise and precision, sending a clear message to the rest of the field.
The Nigerians opened their campaign with a walkover win against Liberia before returning to defeat a spirited Ivorian side led by Oba Oba Kizito, securing a hard-fought 3-1 victory that confirmed their place in the knockout rounds.

While Nigeria looked imperious, one of the day’s most talked-about performances came from Côte d’Ivoire’s Audrey Diama and Eve Ndah, who, despite falling short in the women’s team event, impressed fans and coaches alike with their grit and technique.
Their efforts drew admiration from the crowd, with many tipping the pair as future stars. Their display was a reminder that beyond the wins and losses, the tournament is a platform for emerging talent across West Africa to announce themselves.
In Group 2, the battle remains wide open as Ghana, Togo, Guinea, and Benin Republic continue their bid for semifinal spots. With several matches yet to be concluded at press time, the tension remains high as teams jockey for position.
The day began with a vibrant opening ceremony, where a brief march-past and stirring addresses set the tone for what promises to be a landmark championship. Teams from Ghana, Benin Republic, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso paraded in colourful fashion, bringing cultural flair and excitement to the opening day.

In his remarks, Ferdinand Sonou, Vice President of ITTF Africa West, praised Nigeria and Lagos State for their exceptional hosting.
“I would like to warmly thank the Nigerian authorities, the Lagos State authorities, and the entire organizing committee for their tremendous effort and unwavering commitment to making this event a success,” Sonou said.
“These championships are more than just a sporting competition. They are a celebration of unity, diversity, and sportsmanship—values that lie at the heart of the West African Table Tennis Organization.
This edition in Lagos marks a significant milestone in our journey. It reflects our determination to promote table tennis, preserve our cultural heritage, and inspire the next generation of athletes to push beyond their limits while honouring our traditions.”
Representing the President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Secretary General Olusoji Akanmu echoed that sentiment in his welcome address, thanking the Lagos State Government for its continued support and commitment.
“We appreciate Lagos State’s investment in the growth of the sport. Nigeria remains fully committed to leading the development of table tennis across West Africa,” Akanmu said.
With the team event finals set for Thursday, July 17, fans can expect even more electrifying encounters as the region’s best battle for glory.
