Edo Queens defeated CBE FC 3-0 on Sunday at Stade Larbi Zaouli to get off to a flying start in the CAF Women’s Champions League and go top of group B.
Emem Essien, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi, and Goodness Osigwe all scored goals to seal the victory.
Edo Queens started pressing their Ethopian opponents right after kickoff, and their efforts paid off in the fifth minute when Ijamilusi found Essien with a superb cross that the Nigerian forward neatly finished.
Ijamilusi was involved once more in the 54th minute, joining forces with Esther Moses to complete an outstanding team move and put the score at 2-0.
Chukwuamaka Osigwe, a 17-year-old substitute made history as she entered the game and deftly finished off a chance set up by Moses in the 80th minute to seal the victory.
Elsewhere in Group B, Sandrine Niyonkuru’s penalty kick helped FC Masar’s young team defeat the reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.
After Game week one, Edo Queens and FC Masar are level on three points, but the Nigerian team have the advantage on goal difference.
In the upcoming group B matches, Edo Queens FC will play FC Masar at Stade Larbi Zaouli on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, CBE FC and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will both be vying for their first victory in a match that is sure to excite supporters.
