Shooting Stars head coach Nurudeen Aweroro is confident his team will kick off the new season in style when they host Bayelsa United at the Lekan Salami Stadium on Sunday.
Aweroro, who joined the club following an impressive spell with Ikorodu City last season, is eager to begin his tenure with a statement victory in front of the home fans.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Aweroro expressed optimism about his squad’s readiness and the positive atmosphere in camp. He praised the fitness levels and integration of new signings, stating that the team is prepared to make a strong start.
“In every competition, the first game is always very important,” Aweroro told Shooting Stars Media.

“We need to get maximum points, and if possible, score plenty of goals. But the most important thing is to secure the win. We can’t take this game for granted—we have to come out strong and give our best.”
The coach further emphasized the team’s unity and determination to give their all, not just for the season-opening game, but for the entire campaign.
“The players are ready for the game, even those who won’t feature are eager to play. Their fitness level is top-notch. I like the cohesion in the team; the way they blend together is impressive. The senior players have done a great job in helping integrate the new players.”
After finishing eighth last season and missing out on continental football, Shooting Stars parted ways with veteran coach Gbenga Ogunbote. The club is now banking on Aweroro to not only return them to the continental stage but also mount a serious challenge for a league title that has eluded them for nearly three decades.
