A total of 15 teams, comprising eight men’s and seven women’s squads, have signed up to compete in the first-ever Japa Masters Volleyball Tournament.
The event is scheduled to take place from August 22nd to 24th at the outdoor court of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
Tournament coordinator, Genevieve Obuladike, explained that the primary goal of the Japa Masters is to provide elite volleyball players with a platform to showcase their talents. “The plan of the tournament is to put players in top shape before the commencement of the Nigeria Premier League. We are aware of the need for players to have more playing time to reach their peak.
“We have received entries from participating teams; the tournament is going to be played by eight men’s and seven women’s teams. Nigerians should expect explosive performances from the teams because the players are hungry for competition.
“Japa Masters will create a platform for players to get teams within and outside Africa because talents abound in the country. We are a travel agency and one of our plans is to ensure these volleyball players get the best clubs outside the shores of the country.”
With a total prize pool of up to 4 million naira, including cash and gifts, the tournament promises to be a lucrative event. The champions in both the men’s and women’s categories will each receive a cash prize of 1 million naira. Additional awards will be presented to standout players at the tournament’s conclusion.
