Team Nigeria will not compete at the 2025 World Athletics Relays (World Relays) scheduled to be held in Guangzhou, China this weekend due to visa issues.
According to reports, While the athletes based in Nigeria were granted visas, some of the U.S.-based athletes had their passports returned by the Chinese embassy without receiving visas, effectively ruling out the possibility of their participation in the tournament.
However, as a result of the development, Nigeria have submitted a request to World Athletics for direct entry to the World Championships.
Nigeria initially named 17 athletes for the World Relays, comprising nine women and eight men, who were scheduled to compete in the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays, along with the mixed 4x100m and 4x400m events.

Like Nigeria, the Dominican Republic will also miss the World Relays because of visa complications, while the reigning champions in the men’s 4x400m relay have withdrawn from the competition citing personal reasons.
The 2025 World Athletics Relays is scheduled to take place on May 10 and 11, 2025, at the Guangdong Olympic Stadium in Guangzhou, China. The event serves as a qualifying meet for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, with the top 14 teams in each event securing automatic qualification
