Super Eagles star striker Victor Osimhen has praised his teammates for standing by him after he missed a golden chance to send Nigeria to the final of the African World Cup Qualifying Play-off Tournament during regulation time against Gabon.
Osimhen scored twice as the Super Eagles defeated Gabon 4–1 in the semifinal of the CAF World Cup qualifying playoffs, but he had earlier squandered a one-on-one opportunity with the last kick of regulation time.
Although he redeemed himself with a brace in extra time, he admitted he was initially distraught after the miss. He revealed that his teammates immediately rallied around him, offering encouragement as he promised them he would make things right in extra time.

“When I missed that opportunity, I asked my teammates if we were going straight to penalties or if we had extra time. They told me we had extra time, and I apologised and told them I was going to correct it,” Osimhen said after the game.
“For me, it’s important to have teammates who motivate you just as you motivate them. When you’re down, they do everything to lift you up. Kudos to them.”
Osimhen has been the team’s talisman in the World Cup qualifiers, scoring eight goals in seven games since returning from the injury that ruled him out of the first four matches.
The Galatasaray striker will be hoping to carry his excellent form and influence into Sunday’s final against DR Congo at the Complexe sportif Prince Héritier Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.
