Nigeria Premier Football League debutants Sporting Lagos got off to a good start in their top-flight opener earning a 2-0 win over Gombe United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Monday.
The Lagos-based side started the game on the right foot but were wasteful in the opening sequence of the match with the club’s forwards failing to take the lead.
This changed in the 43rd minute as Rivio Ayemwenre grabbed the opener, Sporting’s first goal of their top-flight campaign. Clement Naatum scored the second goal of the match in the 71st minute off the back of a Junior Lokosa assist.
Gombe United polled pressure on the hosts in the closing minute of the encounter as they tried to salvage a point. They were awarded a penalty kick in the last minute of play but Mojeeb Odifeso blasted his off the far right of the post.
Reacting to the win, Sporting Lagos head coach Paul Offor said he is delighted with the win and the overall performance of his ward also hailing the fans for their unwavering support.
“It is the best start to our time in the NPFL. Getting a win against Gombe United who are no doubt a good side is what we prepared for before the game. I have to applaud the players for their overall performance, I was pleased.”
