Former Nigeria Professional Football League champions Akwa United and Sporting Lagos are set for a thrilling final-day showdown for a Nigeria National League (NNL) Group B promotion spot, with just one point separating both sides.
Sporting edged Solutions FC 1-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena to leapfrog Akwa United by a single point heading into the final round of fixtures.
Akwa had earlier slipped in the race for automatic promotion following a 1-0 defeat to Abakaliki FC in April.
While both teams need a win to boost their chances of securing promotion, the pressure is heavier on Akwa United. Even with victory, their fate may not be in their hands, as a win for Sporting Lagos would automatically seal promotion for the Lagos side.

Both teams will be on the road for their decisive fixtures on Thursday. Sporting travel to face Osun United at the Lanre Lekan Stadium in Ileogbo, while Akwa United take on Solutions FC at the Akwa Township Stadium.
Sporting Lagos are aiming for a return to the top flight after spending two seasons in the lower division following their relegation in the 2023/24 campaign.
Akwa United, who dropped to the NNL last season, are also pushing for an immediate comeback.
Whichever side prevails will hope to join Inter Lagos and Doma United, who have already secured promotion from Groups A and C respectively.
