Rivers United to clash with Young Africans in Confed Cup quarter-finals

Nigeria’s sole representative in CAF’s continental inter-club football competition Rivers United have been drawn to face Tanzania’s Young Africans in the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, the draw was conducted in Cairo Egypt on Wednesday.

Young African, 28-time Tanzania league champions will be hoping to reach their first Confederation Cup semi-finals but will face a tricky test against the Nigerian league champions who have impressed in the competition this season. While African’s first appearance in the quarter final of the competition was in 2018, this is river’s first time appearing in the stage. 

Rivers United finished second behind ASEC Mimosa in the group stage with 10 points from six games. They won three games, lost twice and recorded one draw while Africans topped Group D with 13 points recording four wins, one draw and one loss. The Tanzanians faced oppositions such as Monastir, Real Bamako and TP Mazembe.

The first leg of the tie will be played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt while Rivers United will be at the Tanzania National Main Stadium for the reverse fixture. 

Although it’s the first time Rivers United will be reaching the stage since they were renamed after the merging of Dolphins and Sharks FC, Dolphins had reached the final of the competition back in 2015 losing 3-1 to Morocco’s AS FAR. 

Africans are currently top of the Tanzanian league table, eight points ahead of second placed Simba FC.
