Rivers United relinquished their position as table toppers in the Nigeria Professional Football League as they were held to a frustrating draw against Sunshine Stars at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode on Wednesday, November 27.
While their current form has not been particularly impressive with one win in the last six matches, Rivers United were still expected to defeat Sunshine Stars to ensure they retained their position at the summit of the league table.
Rivers United started the game in impressive fashion, pinning Sunshine Stars to their half, and scoring a very early goal in the 3rd minute of the game, courtesy of a brilliant team move that was finished off by Timothy Zachariah for his first league goal of the season.
The Pride of Rivers had multiple chances to double their lead, but Sunshine Stars were able to stay in the game thanks to squandered opportunities and poor decisions in the final third. Osagie Onisodumeya’s dominant presence in goal also kept Rivers United’s lead intact at halftime despite the Akure Gunners’ attempts to level the score line.
The 61st minute of the game saw Sunshine Stars equalize and get back into the game with Promise Awosanmi’s third goal of the season. The midfielder has now scored in consecutive games for his team with the goal.
Rivers United made several substitutions in an attempt to regain their lead, however Sunshine Stars remained resolute and disciplined in defense. In the 89th minute, Finidi George threw the last roll of the dice as Abba Suleiman replaced Ubong Friday, however, this was not enough to break down the Sunshine Stars defense.
Due to the draw, Rivers United have now surrendered top spot in the NPFL, however, they remain on the same points with current league leaders, Remo Stars (26). They will face off next against Ahmed Musa’s Kano Pillars in an enthralling matchup. Meanwhile, Sunshine Stars visit Katsina United in their next league game.
