Nigeria’s sole representatives at the CAF Champions League, Rivers United have began their tournament on a disappointing note, losing 3-0 to defending champions Pyramids FC at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium on Saturday, Bold Sports reports.
Rivers United were able to deny the hosts of scoring in the first half, but in the second period, Pyramids were rampant, with 22 year old midfielder Ahmed Atef El Sayed scoring a hatrick within 20 minutes to secure victory for the Egyptian side.
El Sayed’s first goal came in the 52nd minute of the game, giving the hosts the lead. Five minutes later, he made it 2-0, breaking Rivers United‘s resolute defense and all but sealing the three points for his side.

Finidi George made some changes to try and get something from the game as Taofeek Otaniyi and Samson Obi were replaced by Emmanuel Nnaji and Timothy Zachariah in the 66th minute. However, the defending champions extended their lead in the 72nd minute with El Sayed completing his hatrick.
In the other group game, RSB Berkane also secured a 3-0 victory over Power Dynamos courtesy of an own goal as well as goals from Mounir Chouiar and Paul Bassene.
The results mean that Pyramids FC and RSB Berkane are both on three points and level on goal difference while Rivers United and Power Dynamos are bottom of the group.
Rivers United will aim to get their first points of the tournament when they host RSB Berkane on Friday, November 28 while Pyramids FC will be looking to gather maximum points against Power Dynamos on Saturday.
