Nigeria’s sole representative in the CAF Champions League, Rivers United, secured their first point of the continental campaign after playing out a 0-0 draw with Zambia’s Power Dynamos at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday, Bold Sports reports.
Rivers United went into the fixture desperate for a response after a difficult start to their group-stage campaign, having suffered a 3-0 defeat to Egypt’s Pyramids FC before losing 2-1 at home to Morocco’s RSB Berkane. Power Dynamos were also searching for their first points, following a 3-0 loss to RSB Berkane and a narrow 1-0 defeat against Pyramids FC in their opening two matches.
Despite the urgency from both sides, it was the hosts who controlled proceedings in the first half. Power Dynamos dominated possession and created the better scoring opportunities, but Rivers United goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya produced a string of impressive saves to deny the Zambian side and keep his team in the contest heading into the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Power Dynamos continuing to push for a breakthrough. However, Rivers United remained compact and disciplined at the back, frustrating the hosts’ attacking efforts. Finidi George’s side largely adopted a counter-attacking approach but struggled to create clear-cut chances, as neither team managed to find the winning goal.
With both defences holding firm, the encounter ended goalless, handing Rivers United and Power Dynamos their first point of the group stage. Rivers United remain third in Group A, while Power Dynamos sit bottom, having failed to score in the tournament so far.
The two sides will meet again on Sunday, February 1, when Rivers United host Power Dynamos at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, with both teams eager to secure victory and boost their chances of progressing from the group.
Before their return to continental action, Rivers United will turn their attention back to domestic duties in the Nigeria Premier Football League, where they are scheduled to face El Kanemi Warriors on Wednesday. The Pride of Rivers currently sit top of the NPFL standings with 41 points and will be looking to maintain their impressive league form in front of their home supporters.
