The much-anticipated showdown between Remo Stars and Rivers United ended in a tense 0-0 draw at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, on Sunday.
With head coach Daniel Ogunmodede away on national duty, assistant coach Sulaimon Kamil took charge of the Sky Blue Stars. He made two changes to the starting lineup, bringing in Emmanuel Nwokeji and Olamilekan Adedayo for Sani Faisal and ThankGod Ikeagwu.
Rivers United, led by Finidi George, made four changes following their surprising defeat to Bayelsa United. Captain Temple Emekayi and Nnaji Emmanuel were among those recalled to the starting XI, as the Pride of Rivers sought redemption.
Both sides enjoyed periods of dominance, creating several clear-cut chances. However, the finishing touch was lacking, and neither team could break the deadlock.
Rivers United will take solace in the result, as it halts their losing streak after consecutive defeats to Ikorodu City and Bayelsa United. More importantly, they managed a clean sheet for the first time in four matches. They remain second on the table with 22 points from 12 games.
For Remo Stars, the draw ends their winning streak at home but extends their unbeaten run to six games. They’ve now kept three consecutive clean sheets and continue to lead the table with 23 points from 12 matches.
Rivers United will aim to get back to winning ways when they face 13th-placed Abia Warriors. Meanwhile, Remo Stars will travel to Katsina United, looking to maintain their momentum and stay on course for a maiden Nigeria Professional Football League title.
