Chidera Ejuke made a triumphant return to Sevilla’s starting lineup, scoring the winning goal in their 1-0 La Liga victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday in his first start since recovering from a hamstring injury.
Ejuke had previously made a gradual return to the team, coming off the bench in games against Mallorca and Rayo Vallecano after making his comeback with an assist in a 4-0 win against Real Valladolid.
However, with his fitness now back to full strength, Ejuke was reinstated to the starting lineup against Real Sociedad as Sevilla were looking to extend their impressive run, having lost only one league game in their last eight.
Ejuke repaid the trust of his coach by scoring the decisive goal just after halftime, receiving a pass from Saul Niguez on the edge of the box before curling in a stunning strike for his second goal of the season.
Despite dominating possession, Real Sociedad were unable to break down Sevilla’s resilient defense. The home side failed to register a single shot on target, allowing Sevilla to secure a crucial win away from home.
The victory propelled Sevilla into the top half of the table with 36 points, leapfrogging Real Sociedad who dropped to 11th place with 34 points in 27 games.
Sevilla will thus aim to continue their upward momentum when they host Athletic Club on March 16. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad will shift their focus to the Europa League, traveling to face Manchester United in the second leg of their round-of-16 tie.
