Osimhen on brink of breaking Galatasaray’s single-season UCL goal record

Victor Osimhen could set another Galatasaray milestone by becoming the club’s highest scorer in a single UEFA Champions League campaign if he nets three goals against Juventus in their round of 16 playoff tie.

Former Turkish striker and current Gaziantep manager Burak Yılmaz holds the record, having scored eight goals in nine appearances during the 2012/13 season, his debut campaign for the Istanbul giants after joining from Trabzonspor.

Yılmaz played a key role in Galatasaray’s run to the quarter-finals that year, where they were eventually eliminated 5-3 on aggregate by Real Madrid.

Osimhen, who has already broken several records since arriving at the club, is within touching distance of that mark after scoring six goals in six matches in this season’s competition, helping power Galatasaray into the round of 16 playoffs against Juventus in a two-legged tie.

The Nigerian international needs two more goals to equal Yılmaz’s record and three to surpass it. Should Galatasaray progress to the next round, Osimhen’s chances of breaking the record would further improve even if he does not score three goals across both legs against the Italian side.

Galatasaray will host Juventus at RAMS Park on Wednesday for the first leg, with the return fixture set to take place in Turin next week.

Despite the European focus, one of Osimhen’s key priorities will also be helping Galatasaray secure a second consecutive domestic league title, as they currently hold a slim three-point lead over closest challengers Fenerbahçe.
