Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen etched his name in the history books on Tuesday night after becoming Nigeria’s all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League with his decisive strike in Galatasaray’s 1-0 win over Liverpool at RAMS Park, Bold Sports reports.

The 26-year-old netted his 10th career goal in the competition against the Reds, surpassing Obafemi Martins’ tally of nine. Victor Ikpeba sits third on seven goals, while Nwankwo Kanu, Ademola Lookman and Yakubu Aiyegbeni all share five apiece.

Osimhen’s record-breaking moment came in the 16th minute when referee Clement Turpin awarded Galatasaray a penalty after Liverpool makeshift right back Dominik Szoboszlai caught Baris Asper Yilmaz with a stray arm. The Nigerian striker stepped up with trademark composure and cooly slotted the ball into the centre of the goal.

The strike proved crucial as Galatasaray condemned the Premier League champions to their second successive defeat. Asides his goal, Osimhen’s relentless pressing and tireless movement earned him the official UEFA Man of the Match award — a performance made even more remarkable given his recent return from injury.

The former Napoli star now has three goals in all competitions this season, adding to his strikes against Kayserispor and Rizespor in the Super Lig. He is expected to lead the line again this weekend in a heated Istanbul derby against Besiktas, where he will face fellow Nigerian Wilfred Ndidi.

For Galatasaray, the win marks their first three points of the 2025-26 Champions League campaign, lifting them up to 18th on the table. The Turkish Champions will next host Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt on October 22 as they look to build momentum in their European journey.
