Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, has credited his teammates for their collective effort after leading Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nwabali was the hero of the night, stopping two penalties and winning the Man of the Match award as Nigeria beat South Africa 4-2 in the shootout after a 1-1 stalemate in Bouake on Wednesday.
The modest keeper downplayed his individual brilliance and instead focused on Nigeria’s team spirit.
“It has been a good team performance throughout this tournament. I really appreciate the management and coaches,” Nwabali said.
He also expressed his gratitude to head coach Jose Peseiro, who visited him in South Africa before AFCON and boosted his confidence.
“When the coach informed me he was coming to visit, for me it was one of the biggest things. A coach to come visit was a motivation. When he said he was coming I was really pleased,” Nwabali said.
Nwabali’s humility and professionalism have won the hearts of Nigerian fans during a magical tournament.
His penalty saves against South Africa will go down in history, securing his place in Nigerian legend.
But for Nwabali, the team comes first. As Nigeria get ready for the final against Ivory Coast, their strong bond could give them the edge.
Nwabali represents this bond, shunning glory and raising the bar. “These guys have really guided me a lot throughout this tournament, and I feel so happy,” he said.
