Everton striker Neal Maupay has hailed the performance of Alex Iwobi was named the Man of The Match in the Toffees 1-0 win over struggling West Ham United on Sunday, their first Premier League win of the season.
The Nigeria international who has been one of the best performing players for Frank Lampard’s side since he took over the job last season put up a show in the heart of the midfield against West Ham United at Goodison Park. The 26-year-old provided the pass for Maupay who expertly controlled the ball before turning and shooting powerfully past Lukasz Fabianski.
Despite being just the assist provider, Iwobi was voted as the Player of The Match by fans of the club as a result of his impressive performance.
Speaking after the match, Maupay hailed his teammates especially Iwobi who provided the pass for his first Everton goal, “We’ve got very good players in midfield and the wings. I trust them to make the difference,” Maupay told the club website. “I have to be there to finish and it was a great pass from Alex. I’m just happy for the team.”
In the game, Iwobi won 100% of his tackles, recorded 83% pass accuracy, had a total of 74 touches, eight ball recoveries, two successful dribbles and two key passes.
Iwobi has however credited Lampard over his improved performance. “I’ve always had the mindset that I can try and prove people wrong, the manager has given me faith to do so,” he said after the match.
The win sees them move to 13th on the log heading into the international break.
