Ademola Lookman has described his Atlético Madrid debut as a “dream start” after scoring and delivering a standout performance in the club’s dominant 5–0 victory over Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarter-final on Saturday.
The Nigerian international, who recently completed a move to the Spanish giants, wasted no time making his mark as he found the net and played a key role in Atlético’s attacking display.
Atlético Madrid dominated from the start, with David Hancko heading in Koke’s corner after 12 minutes before Giuliano Simeone doubled the lead on the half-hour mark. Ademola Lookman marked his debut with a composed finish before the break and later assisted Antoine Griezmann on the counter. Thiago Almada sealed the emphatic 5–0 win late on.
Speaking after the match in an interview with Sporty TV, Lookman expressed his delight at his first outing in Atlético colours. “I’m very, very happy. It’s been great coming here and being welcomed into the team,” he said. “Everybody’s been great with me, so it’s a dream start.”

The winger revealed that his focus was on being direct and dangerous whenever he had the ball. “I just try to make them run and try to be dangerous in those situations,” Lookman explained. “It’s about repetition, keep making those runs and movements and always trying to be dangerous.”
On handling the pressure of joining a club of Atlético Madrid’s stature, Lookman admitted that the environment motivates him. “I’m very, very happy to be at such a special club. That feeling makes me want to work hard and perform,” he added.
Looking ahead to their upcoming league clash against Real Betis, Lookman stressed the importance of maintaining intensity. “We created a lot of chances today, and without the ball we were very strong. We won the ball back many times and broke on them, so we just have to stay solid,” he concluded.
