Lawrence Okolie hires Tyson Fury trainer SugarHill Steward

WBO cruiserweight champion, Lawrence Okolie, has teamed up with experienced American trainer, SugarHill Steward, ahead of his scheduled clash with mandatory challenger David Light on March 11.

It will be the third title defence for Okogie who edged Krzysztof Głowacki for the belt via knockout in March 2021 before defending the title against Dilan Prašović via knockout in September 2021 and a unanimous decision win over Michał Cieślak in February 2022.

The 30-year-old London born boxer of Nigerian descent announced the news on his social media platform, “SUGAR & SAUCE and EVERYTHING NICE. Pleased to announce I will be working with @kronksugarhill looking forward to the future.”

Okolie had been training with Shane McGuigan since May 2019, and their six-fight winning streak culminated in Okolie’s world title triumph in March 2021 after a six-round knockout victory over Krzysztof Glowacki.

Steward is well known to boxing fans around the world as the trainer of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. He trained Fury to the knockout wins over Deontay Wilder.

Okolie’s last fight was in February 2022. The boxer had been at loggerheads with ex-promoter Eddie Hearn.
