FC Basel are on the verge of completing the signing of highly rated Nigerian defender Akpe Victory, with the Swiss club moving ahead of several European rivals in the race for the 19-year-old’s signature, Boldsports report.

The Swiss giants have spent weeks negotiating with Hungarian side Zalaegerszegi TE (ZTE) and are now close to reaching an agreement. Victory has enjoyed a rapid rise since arriving in Europe two years ago, and his performances in Hungary have made him one of Nigeria’s most promising young defenders. During the summer transfer window, he attracted interest from Rangers, Strasbourg, Benfica and Trabzonspor, but Basel now appear set to win the race.

‎The Abuja-born defender began his European career with Lithuanian club Banga before joining Zalaegerszeg earlier this year. Since making the move to Hungary, he has adapted quickly and established himself as one of the league’s emerging defensive talents.

‎Standing at 6ft 5in, Victory combines his physical presence with strong aerial ability and composure on the ball. He is comfortable defending one-on-one situations and has the technical quality to help teams build attacks from the back, qualities that fit the demands of the modern game.‎
