Nigerian forward David Akintola scored his first goal for Hull City to secure a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at the MKM Stadium in an EFL Championship encounter on Saturday.

Akintola, who joined the club in the summer, had gone his first six games without a goal but emerged as the hero on matchday nine, striking the decisive winner in the 30th minute.

The 28-year-old capitalised on a poor clearance from the Sheffield defence after Lewie Coyle’s cross, smashing home a well-taken volley to hand the Tigers a vital three points.

Goalkeeper Ivor Pandur was also instrumental, producing a stunning 88th-minute penalty save to deny Harrison Burrows and preserve Hull’s lead.

Akintola was replaced by Matt Crooks in the 62nd minute, while Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi marked his return from a hamstring injury with an 82nd-minute cameo, coming on for Olie McBurnie. It was Ajayi’s first appearance since the opening-day goalless draw against Coventry City.

The victory, Hull’s third of the season, lifted them temporarily to 10th place after beginning the day in 18th. The Tigers now have three wins, three draws and three defeats from their opening nine games.
