Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens got their first points of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup without playing as their match against Samoa was unfortunately abandoned due to a wet outfield.

The game was set to hold at the Borneo Cricket Ground, Sarawak and kick-off was originally scheduled for 3:30 AM (WAT). However, due to the heavy downpour, both teams share the points as they continue to prepare for their remaining fixtures.

With their first points secured, the Junior Female Yellow Greens will now shift their attention to their upcoming matches, battling against New Zealand on January 20 and South Africa on January 22.

As the competition unfolds, the Junior Female Yellow Greens remain determined to make Nigeria proud and create a memorable impact in the tournament.

After securing the Africa Qualifier Division 1 title in Kigali, Rwanda last September, the team has set its sights on making history at the World Cup in Malaysia, taking place from January 18 to February 2, 2025.

Coach Sarah Bakhita shared her disappointment following the abandoned match, but also shifted her focus towards the upcoming game: “Today’s game is not the outcome we had anticipated but we can only control the controllable, so we look forward to the next match,” she said.

According to Bakhita, the team remains resolute and is committed to giving their all in the next match in order to accomplish their objectives for the tournament.

”Moving on to the next game, we’ll go hard because we know what is at stake. Our goal is to make it to the semifinals first before we can talk about taking the cup back to Nigeria so we need to lift ourselves up and give it our all in the next game,” the coach declared.
