The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature in Sunday’s crucial World Cup playoff final against DR Congo, ending the debate over his availability, Bold Sports reports.
According to a tweet released on the Super Eagles’ official X (Twitter) page, CAF officially clarified that Ndidi remains eligible for the decisive clash. The post read: “CAF has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature for the Super Eagles in Sunday’s playoff clash against DR Congo. Cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs; only confirmed suspensions apply.”
Ndidi picked up a sixth-minute yellow card in Nigeria’s semifinal win over Gabon, his second of the campaign after receiving one in the 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali.
The booking sparked widespread conversations on social media, with many fans fearing the influential midfielder would be suspended for the all-important clash in Rabat. However, with the reported confirmation, Ndidi is cleared to start on Sunday, much to the relief of head coach Eric Chelle and Nigerian supporters.
The Besiktas man delivered one of his strongest performances of the campaign in the semifinal, playing the full 120 minutes and assisting Chidera Ejuke’s goal as Nigeria battled past Gabon. After a 1-1 draw in regulation time, Ejuke’s strike and a brace from Victor Osimhen sealed a 4-1 victory, keeping the Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes intact.

DR Congo booked their own ticket to the final with a dramatic 1-0 win over Cameroon in the second semifinal at the Stade El Barid. Chancel Mbemba scored the crucial late goal, ensuring the Leopards’ place in Sunday’s showdown.
Nigeria and DR Congo will now face off at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah at 8 p.m., with a spot in the Interconfederation playoffs in March 2026 on the line.
