Ese Brume delivered a season best leap of 6.85 meters to win a silver medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championship in Belgrade Serbia on the last day of action of the competition.
Serbian Ivana Vuleta electrified the home crowd with a final jump of 7.06m to claim a goal on home soil while Britain’s Lorraine Ugen picked up the bronze medal with a jump of 6.82m to claim the bronze medal.
The medal was Nigeria’s first in the World Indoor Championships in 14 years and the only medal won by the country at the 2022 edition. Brume’s compatriot Ruth Usoro failed to reach the podium after she recorded a season best leap of 6.69m to finish eight on the list of 15 athletes.
Brume, who won a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo had been confident of winning a medal at the championships, revealing that she had prepared well.
“So far I’ve trained, I have worked well with my coach and this is like a test to see what I and the rest of the athletes have and hopefully, we’ll try and put in a good performance. Every athlete is working hard to win a medal at the Championships and I’m one of them. I have worked hard and I’m hoping for the best,” Brume she said before departing for Serbia.
Nigeria failed to win a medal in the men’s 4×400 event. The country was represented by the quartet of Sikiru Adeyemi, Nathaniel Samson, Timothy Emewoghene and Ifeanyi Ojeli.
