Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey, has been named in the 2021/22 Europa League team of the season after his impressive performance for Glasgow Rangers on their way to reaching the final of the competition.
The Gers lost 5-4 on penalties after regulation and extra time had ended 1-1 on Wednesday in the final in Seville, a result that saw German side Frankfurt end their 45-year wait for a European crown.
His compatriot, Joe Aribo, who scored Rangers’ only goal in the final and had been impressive all season in the competition was omitted. Bassey joins teammates Ryan Kent and James Tavernier on the list.
Others players on the list are West Ham’s duo Declan Rice and Craig Dawson while RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Konrad Laimer were also included.
Champions Frankfurt had a total of four players included in the list including the best player in the competition for the 2021/22 campaign Filip Kostić, Martin Hinteregger, Rafael Borré and goalkeeper, Kevin Trapp.
The 22-year-old was adjudged one of the best players in the final by a host of pundits with former Tottenham Hotspur player Jamie O’Hara likening him to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, ““What a player, he was like [Virgil] Van Dijk!” O’Hara told TalkSport.
Bassey made 14 appearances in the Europa League this season.
