Ashley Anumba led a clean sweep of medals as Nigeria won gold, silver and bronze medals in the women’s discus event of the CAA African Senior Championships in Douala, Cameroon on Friday.
Anumba won the gold medal with a throw of 59.30m which she achieved in the last round of throwing to lead her other two compatriots.
Obiageri Amaechi won the silver medal with a throw of 58.80m while Chioma Onyekwere – who had earlier won the national title earlier in the week – claimed the bronze medal with a throw of 57.96m.
Anumba’s win was Nigeria’s second gold medal after Chukwuebuka Enekwechi had also won the gold medal in the men’s shot put event.
Enekwechi won the gold medal in a Championship Record throw of 21.20m, his third in a row.
Day one of the event also saw Kanyisola Ajayi winning his heat in the men’s 100m event in 10.21s. Usheoritse Itsekiri and Godson Brume were second and third in their own heats in 10.36s and 10.51s respectively to qualify for the semi final.
In the women’s 100m, Favour Ofili and Olayinka Olajide won their heats to qualify for the semi final in 11.22s and 11.67s respectively. Rosemary Chukwuma also made it to the semi final after placing second in her heat in 11.32s behind Ivory Coast’s Marie Josée Ta Lou-Smith who won in 11.14s.
