Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualification situation has become more complicated after the Super Eagles suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau. The result leaves Éric Chelle’s side needing a strong run in their remaining four Group L matches, with only one qualification place available to the non-host nations.
Guinea-Bissau take control of Group L
Nigeria entered the match with three points from their opening game. Éric Chelle’s side had beaten Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on Matchday 1. Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, had already defeated Tanzania 2-0. The latest victory now gives the Djurtus six points from two matches.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring after 15 minutes. Mama Baldé then doubled the advantage after the hour mark. Álvaro Djaló completed the win in stoppage time. Nigeria therefore suffered their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.
The result leaves Nigeria needing a strong response in the next qualification window.

Why second place may not be enough
Group L has a different qualification equation. Tanzania are one of the three hosts of AFCON 2027. They therefore have an automatic place at the tournament.
CAF confirmed that only the highest-ranked non-host nation will qualify from Group L. This differs from the standard rule in most groups, where the top two teams qualify.
That means Nigeria cannot rely on finishing second. The Super Eagles must finish above Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar to secure the group’s available qualification place.
Nigeria’s next two fixtures come against Tanzania. The first meeting will take place in November, with the reverse fixture following in the same international window.
Those matches could prove important for Nigeria’s position before the final qualification window.
Nigeria’s remaining fixtures
CAF’s qualifying schedule places Matchdays 3 and 4 in the 9-17 November 2026 international window. The final two rounds will follow between 22 and 30 March 2027.

The Super Eagles therefore still have four matches to change the picture. They will also have a home meeting with Guinea-Bissau on the final matchday.
What Nigeria need from the remaining matches
The 3-0 defeat means Nigeria have little room for error. One possible route would require the Super Eagles to take maximum points from their November double-header against Tanzania before facing Madagascar away in March.
That would put greater pressure on Guinea-Bissau to maintain their advantage. If the Djurtus match Nigeria’s results in the remaining fixtures, the final meeting between both sides could become decisive.
In that situation, goal difference could also become important. Nigeria’s heavy defeat in Bissau has already created a significant deficit in the head-to-head score between the two teams.
The exact qualification equation, however, will depend on the standings after the November matches. Results involving Madagascar and Tanzania will also shape the final picture.
AFCON 2027 qualification race
The 2027 AFCON will begin on 19 June 2027. The final is scheduled for 17 July. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will jointly host the tournament, with 24 teams expected to compete.
Nigeria now have little room for further dropped points. The November double-header against Tanzania will be particularly significant because every point could affect the race for the only available qualification position.
The Super Eagles still control their remaining schedule. However, Guinea-Bissau’s perfect start has changed the pressure around Group L.
Nigeria must now recover quickly and produce results in the remaining four matches if they are to reach AFCON 2027 in East Africa.
