Nigeria’s Green Hawks will play Tanzania for ninth place at the African Netball World Cup qualifiers on Friday after losing all four of their group matches in Nairobi.
The tournament brought Nigeria up against some of the continent’s established sides. Hosts Kenya beat the Green Hawks 61-40 in their opener before Uganda won 68-30. Malawi handed Nigeria their heaviest defeat, 82-22, and Zambia completed the group campaign with a 63-44 victory.
The Zambia match was Nigeria’s highest-scoring outing of the four, but the Green Hawks were unable to turn it into a result. Having finished outside the places that could take them to the 2027 World Cup, they will end their tournament against a Tanzania side that also lost all its group games.
South Africa and Uganda had already qualified for the World Cup through their rankings before the Nairobi event. The tournament was to determine the remaining African qualifiers, placing Nigeria in a demanding group that included Uganda, Malawi, Kenya and Zambia.

Friday’s ninth-place playoff begins at 4pm Nigerian time at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. It is one more competitive match for a Nigerian side at the beginning of its international netball journey, and a chance to leave Nairobi with a victory.
