Udodi Onwuzurike continued Team Nigeria’s impressive showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games by winning silver in the men’s 200m final on Friday in Glasgow.
The 23-year-old clocked a season’s best of 20.09 seconds (+1.7) from the challenging lane eight to finish second behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who stormed to gold in 19.96s. Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor claimed the bronze medal with a personal best of 20.11s.
The silver medal is Onwuzurike’s first individual Commonwealth Games podium finish, adding to the bronze medal he won as part of Nigeria’s 4x100m relay team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Onwuzurike’s achievement capped another memorable day for Team Nigeria.

Earlier, Ezekiel Nathaniel produced a historic performance to win Nigeria’s ninth gold medal of the Games, powering to victory in the men’s 400m hurdles in 48.47s. England’s Jake Minshull settled for silver in 48.99s, while Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson claimed bronze in 49.22s.
Nigeria also made history in the inaugural Commonwealth Games mixed 4x400m relay, with the quartet of Edidiong Udo, Esther Elo Joseph, Samuel Ogazi and Patience Okon-George dominating the heats.
The Nigerian team clocked 3:14.58 to finish as the fastest qualifiers for the final, underlining their status as strong medal contenders.
In the field events, Ruth Usoro progressed to the women’s long jump final after producing a season’s best leap of 6.77m with her opening attempt, comfortably achieving the automatic qualification standard.
Meanwhile, Jami Schlueter rounded off an impressive Commonwealth Games debut by finishing seventh in the men’s decathlon with a total of 7,665 points.
Onwuzurike’s silver increased Team Nigeria’s haul at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games to 18 medals, with nine gold, six silver and three bronze.
