Chukwuebuka Enekwechi produced a stunning performance to claim gold in the men’s shot put at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday, delivering a best throw of 21.07m in the fifth round.
The 33-year-old Nigerian edged New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, who settled for silver with 21.03m, while England’s Scott Lincoln claimed bronze after throwing 20.99m.
Enekwechi’s triumph capped an impressive campaign after he booked his place in the final with just one throw in the qualification round, as his opening effort of 20.03m met the automatic qualifying standard.
The gold medal also represents a significant improvement on his previous Commonwealth Games outing. At the 2018 Gold Coast Games, Enekwechi won silver behind Walsh, but this time he reversed the result to stand top of the podium.

South Africa’s Aiden Smith finished fourth with 20.31m, while India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor placed fifth on 20.27m, the same mark recorded by New Zealand’s Nick Palmer, who finished sixth.
India’s Samardeep Singh Gill was seventh with 20.03m, followed by Cyprus’ Petros Michaelides in eighth with 19.23m. Djimon Gumbs of the British Virgin Islands placed ninth with 18.45m, while Nauru’s Jonathan-Deiwea Detageouwa recorded a season’s best of 16.99m for 10th. Mauritius’ Bernard Baptiste finished 11th with 16.27m, while Tonga’s Penisimani Taeiloa did not register a mark.
Enekwechi’s victory takes Team Nigeria’s medal haul at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to 15 medals, with eight gold, five silver and two bronze, as the country continues its impressive showing in Glasgow.
