Chiamaka Nnadozie says the Super Falcons take full responsibility for their shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), stating that the team will bounce back from the disappointing result.
The defending champions suffered one of the biggest upsets of the tournament on Tuesday as debutants Malawi claimed a famous victory through a brace from Temwa Chawinga and a goal from Tabitha Chawinga.
Despite finding the net twice, the Super Falcons were unable to avoid defeat, leaving their title defence under early pressure after a disappointing start to the competition.
The result means Justin Madugu’s side must now secure victory against Zambia on Saturday, August 1, with another defeat likely to end their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.

Reacting to the loss, Nnadozie took to her social media platforms to express the team’s disappointment while accepting responsibility on behalf of the squad.
“This one really hurts. Not the result we wanted, but the fight was real. Left it all on the field, but wasn’t enough to get the 3 points,” the Brighton shot-stopper wrote.
“We take full responsibility for our performance against a very tough opponent. Falls hurt, but we do not stay down. Proud of this team,” she added.
Chiamaka Nnadozie’s comments underline the determination within the Super Falcons camp to recover quickly from the setback.
However, Nigeria face another stern test against a confident Zambia side that opened their campaign with a resounding 6-0 victory over Egypt. Captain Barbra Banda scored four goals in a dominant display as the Copper Queens announced themselves as serious contenders.
Saturday’s encounter also presents Zambia with an opportunity for revenge after suffering a 5-0 defeat to Nigeria in the quarterfinals of the 2024 WAFCON. For the Super Falcons, meanwhile, the clash has become a must-win fixture as they look to keep their title defence on track.
