Abduljabar Adama produced an impressive performance on Day Two of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, reaching the men’s 50m swimming freestyle semifinal before narrowly missing out on a place in the final, Bold Sports reports.
The Nigerian national record holder booked his place in the semifinal after finishing third in his heat with a time of 22.67 seconds. His effort saw him rank 11th overall, trailing only Australia’s Flynn Southam (22.03s) and England’s Jacob Mills (22.40s) in his heat.
In the same event, Clinton Opute narrowly missed out on a semifinal spot. The Nigerian swimmer placed sixth in his heat in 23.15 seconds, ending the qualification rounds as the second reserve for the semifinals.
Adama later returned to the pool for the heats of the men’s 100m butterfly alongside compatriot Colins Ebingha. Ebingha clocked 55.45 seconds to finish sixth in his heat, narrowly missing qualification, while Adama placed seventh with a time of 55.81 seconds.

Adama made his third appearance of the day in the 50m freestyle semifinal, where he improved his time to 22.44 seconds but finished sixth in Semifinal Two, falling short of a place in the final.
In other events, David Akintola bowed out of the men’s boxing competition after suffering a defeat to Tanzania’s Yusuf Lucasi Changalawe in the round of 32. The Nigerian lost via a 4-1 split decision, with Changalawe advancing to the round of 16.
Team Nigeria also endured a difficult outing in the women’s wheelchair 3×3 basketball event, where they were comprehensively beaten 16-1 by hosts Scotland.
Despite several encouraging performances across different events, Team Nigeria finished Day Two without adding to their medal haul, remaining on the three gold and three silver medals they secured during an outstanding opening day.
